Acupuncture FAQ

What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is the insertion of sterile, filiform needles into the body.  Acupuncture is a stimulation therapy.  Techniques are used on specific anatomical points on the body to help regulate functional activities of the body and strengthen the body's ability to fend off illness.

What is Chinese herbal medicine?
Chinese herbal medicine is much too often overlooked in the United States.  Used in conjunction with acupuncture, herbal medicine is extremely effective.  Herbal medicine is commonly used for: cold/flu, allergies, digestive disorders, headache/migraine, and many other diseases.  Unlike many over-the-counter prescriptions, Chinese herbs have few to no side effects. An herbal consultation consists of a brief overview of your signs and symptoms, and a prescription for herbal therapy.

What is cupping?

Cupping is a simple method with a great therapeutic effect.  Glass jars are applied to the surface of the skin with negative pressure in order to establish a vacuum.  Cupping is often used to treat back pain, colds, and allergies.

How does Acupuncture & Traditional Chinese Medicine work?
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) works holistically.  Meaning, it treats the entirety of the person and not  just the ailment.  Health is obtained by internal balance.  TCM uses herbs, acupuncture, and body therapy to harmonize the energy in the body and bring it back into balance.  When the body, mind, and spirit are strengthened, ailments can no longer compete.  The client feels stronger, not only physically, but emotionally and spiritually as well.

Does acupuncture hurt?
The level of sensations vary from patient to patient.  Initial insertion can be described as a mosquito bite.  Most people experience little to no pain.  In some circumstances, your acupuncturist may want you to feel a dull achy sensation, but never sharp or painful.

Are the needles safe and sterilized?
Yes. All needles are safe and sterilized with EOG.  The needles are disposable and only used once before disposed of.

How long will it take to cure my ailment?
On average it will take 8-12 treatments.  However, it is important to remember that each individual will respond differently to acupuncture depending on the severity and duration of an ailment.
It may be recommended that a client receive 1-3 treatments per week until the symptoms are gone, and treatments once per month or once every two months thereafter for maintenance.
