Massage FAQ

What is a Swedish Relaxation Massage?

Swedish massage uses gentle, smooth, relaxing strokes to help ease muscle tension and release stress.  It is the most common type of massage.  Swedish massage is ideal because it can ease the mind and decrease muscular tension by increasing the oxygen flow in the blood stream and cleansing the tissue of lactic acid, uric acid, and other toxins.

What is a Deep Tissue Massage?
As opposed to the Swedish massage, deep tissue massage does not have such smooth and gentle strokes.  In a deep tissue massage all layers of muscle will be manipulated.  It is usually more concentrated and may not be as relaxing.  It is recommended for people with chronic pain, athletes, or those recovering from an injury.

What is a Back & Neck Massage?
It is a perfect massage for those who work at computers all day.  A 25 minute massage that focuses on releasing tension in the neck and shoulder region.  Ideal for a relaxing lunch break.

What is Acupressure?
Acupressure is simply the stimulation of acupuncture points by finger pressure instead of the insertion of needles.  An acupressure session can reduce stress and bring the body back into balance.

What is Reflexology?
Reflexology is a form of massage that is used to treat the entire body by activating trigger points in the palms and the feet.

Do I have to take my clothes off?
The most important aspect about receiving a massage is your comfort level.  The time spent receiving a massage is your time and you deserve to be at ease during your session.  Having access and the ability to apply massage creme directly to the skin allows the massage therapist to better manipulate muscle and tissue. However it is not necessary.  It is important to note that your massage therapist is required to keep you covered except for the area being worked on.

What if I am uncomfortable during my massage?
If you are uncomfortable at anytime just let your therapist know.  Some things that make people uncomfortable during a massage may include: the temperature of the room, the music may be too loud or not loud enough, the head rest may not be adjusted properly, the pressure may be too firm or not firm enough.  Feel free to communicate openly with your therapist.  She/he will be more than happy to make you as comfortable as possible.

What should I expect after my massage?
Most people feel extremely relaxed after a massage.  If it is your first time receiving a massage, you may feel a bit light headed or dizzy after your session.  It is important not to leave/drive if you feel this way.  To prevent this from happening, do not come with an empty stomach, get off the table slowly after your session, and relax in the waiting room for a few minutes and drink some warm water.  On rare occasions people will feel achy after a massage.  It will usually go away by the next day and you will then feel the benefits of the massage.  If it lasts longer than 24 hours contact your therapist and/or doctor.  It is always important to rest and drink a lot of water after a massage to help flush the tissue of lactic acid and other toxins that have been released from the massage.  The acids and toxins in your tissue are what cause the ache in your body.
